He progressed through the Burnley Centre of Excellence to be offered a full time contract by Eddie Howe in May 2011. Joe made the bench on January 7th 2012, when Burnley played Norwich City in the FA Cup third round, Burnley lost 4-1 and Joe unfortunately never got on.A few days later, Joe moved on loan to his hometown club Barrow, he made his debut the following night against Fleetwood Town where he came of the bench to score his first professional goal, Alex-Ray Harvey also played in the match completing the full 90 minutes. Eddie Howe recalled Joe from Barrow with the intention of giving the youngster first team experience, and after a couple of selections in the matchday sixteen, Joe finally made his professional debut in the penultimate game of the 2011/12 season away at Blackpool. The start of the 2012/13 season Joe found himself back in his hometown of Barrow, where he joined with another of Burnley's first year professionals Tom Anderson. On 4 April 2013, it was announced that he would not be offered a new contract when it expired in the summer.
