Name: Joseph Nicol 'Nicky' Walker Date of Birth: 29th September 1962 Place of Birth: Aberdeen Clubs: Elgin City, Keith (Loan), Inverness Caledonian Thistle, Leicester City, Motherwell, Rangers, Falkirk (Loan), Dunfermline, Hearts of Midlothian, Burnley (Loan), Partick Thistle. Clubs Managed: None Signed by Jimmy Mullen Burnley Fee: Loan Clarets Debut: 22nd February 1992, Blackpool D 1-1 Last game for Burnley: 21st March 1992, Mansfield Town W 1-0 Claret Stats: 6 Appearances Claret Honours: A member of the 1992 Championship squad. International Honours: Scottish International (2 Full Caps) Claret Stat: The fourth of five goalkeepers used by Jimmy Mullen in the successful Championship season in 1992, after Pearce, Williams, then Lonee's Andy Marriott and finally Mark Kendall, arguably Nicky Walker was the best of the five. A Scottish International, who had previously played in England with Leicester City in 1981/82 (making only 6 appearances). Nicky was journey man of a goalie, moving through Scotland from Elgin City trough to Inverness Caledonian Thistle, playing at Motherwell, Hearts, Partick Thistle, Aberdeen, Ross County, Dunfermline Athletic but most notably Scottish giants Glasgow Rangers. It was at Rangers where Nicky played almost 100 games in all competitions for, this was before the Graeme Souness revolution which saw Nicky play second fiddle to Chris Woods (who would spend one season a Claret in 1997/98). Nicky made six appearances with Burnley winning four, drawing one with just the one blemish a 3-0 reverse at Gillingham. It was pretty obvious to all that Nicky was the one Jimmy wanted to start as his number one in the Second Division after Burnley's promotion, and after near faultless performances in his short cameo role in the championship season, and newspaper reports of the time tell of numerous advances made to Hearts by Jimmy Mullen. (out of interest, the keeper who did eventually solve Jimmy keeper troubles was Marlon Beresford). Nicky was never to be a Claret permanently, Nicky played out his career in Scotland, retiring in 2002 his last club being the furthest north, Inverness. He did gain two Scottish Caps, both after leaving Burnley, against Germany in 1993 and USA three years later, Nicky was the unused sub goalkeeper in the Euro96 competition held in England, Andy Goram playing in all Scotland's games. |
