3rd December 1991 saw Burnley play host to Russian side Dynamo Stavropol ,in a game that was not taken to the hearts of most of the Claret contingent as a crowd of around 2000 (Hardly bumper) saw Burnley win 4-3 with goals coming from Micheal Conroy, John Francis and youngster Danny Sonner. The game was part of a package what saw Burnley play behind the iron curtain for the first time in their 109 year history ,with games against Dynamo Stavropol and Asmaral both game finished 1-1 with Micheal Conroy netting his first burnley goal against Dynamo ,and John Francis scoring against Asmaral.(unfortunately i do not posses these programmes)
Champions of the Fourth Division verses Champions of Europe ,not even Roy of the rovers could have predicted this. Ajax who had just won the Uefa cup by beating Juventus in a two legged final were guests at Turf Moor in this prestigious Friendly. Just under 11.000 turned out for a game where the master craftsmen from Holland showed their pedigree with a 1-0 victory Bryan Roy with the goal.In goal for the Dutch masters was Edwin Van Der Sar who only this year (2008) won the Champions league with Manchester United . |
