Claret Stats: Michael Duff was signed from Cheltenham where he had come through the youth set up. Well known to Steve Cotterill from his time as Cheltenham manager he was recruited to the Burnley ranks early in Steve's reign, stepping up the divisions to join us. He played largely as a right back for his first season but was increasingly utilised as a centre half and formed a solid and formidable partnership with Wayne Thomas until a terrible injury in September 07 brought his season to close. Not expected to return until at least the 2008/2009 season he made excellent progress and was back playing by the end of the 07/08 season. Burnley fans are now praying he can recover his pre injury form. When Burnley secured promotion to the premiership in 2008/09 Duff took part in 30 league games, with he and Clarke Carlisle forming a formidable partnership in the centre of defence. Duff again was struck down by injury as Burnley started their first ever season in the Premier, but managed to start 10 games mostly toward the end of the season, and while club captain Steven Caldwell was released 'Duffer' was offered a new two year deal to fight out the centre half spot with Leon Cort, Andre Bikey, David Edgar and Clarke Carlisle. With Clarke Carlisle shipped out on loan to Preston for the season, Duff waited in the wings as a centre half partnership of new loan signing Ben Mee and Andre Bikey (now named Amougou) was the prefered central partnership, but after Amougous lapses in concentration led to a couple of goals, Michael Duff came in for Burnley's third game of the season alongside Ben Mee, and made a telling performance in the one all draw. Towards the end of the 2011/12 season manager Howe gave Michael a well deserved contract extension, after showing the form that has made Duff a firm fans favorite in his previous seven years as a Claret. After Howe left for Bournemouth, Sean Dyche used Michael Duff in his new defence minded Clarets, Duff played enough games to trigger a further year taking the former Cheltenham player up to the summer of 2014.
