Monday 5th October 1959 ( Neil Dougall Testimonial)

 6th Oct 1959

Plymouth Argyle 1 - 6 Burnley

Goalscorers:Robson(3)Pilkington,Harris,White

Neil Dougall will not play in his benefit game against first division Burnley at Home Park tonight (kick off 7-30pm). Said Mr Rowley: I had a word with Neil today and he doesn't really feel up to it. Roger Smith aged 18 plays in goal because Mr Rowley wants to give the youngster some first team experience. Reg Wyatt is unfit so Gordon Fincham takes over at centre half.

Burnley who are travalling to and from the game by air make two changes from the side who drew 1-1 at Tottenham on Saturday. They have won seven of their eleven matches and are only a point behind Tottenham, the first division leaders.

Bob Seith comes in at right half, Brian Pilkington switches from outside left to outside right and Gordon Harris takes the left wing position.

Folkstone 1 - 3 Burnley

Goalscorer: Connelly(2), White

Who else but Burnley would send the entire first team down to Kent to play a friendly a few days before a top of the table clash with league leaders Tottenham Hotspur? Not only that, but then follow up with another friendly at Plymouth on the Monday immediately after this game, especially as they are challenging for the League title, unbelievable! Well they did and Folkestone were to be ever grateful to them for doing so, if only the Kent club knew then, that they were entertaining the Champions elect.

Burnley entertained a full house at Cheriton Road to commemorate the Kent club’s new floodlight installation. This was to be the first game of an eventual three against Folkestone, with the Clarets appearing again in 1961, and the third visit was in the pre-season of 1982 with Brian Miller (who played in both the 1959 and 1961 games) taking his side down there again at the invitation of the Kent club.

The game itself proved to be very entertaining with the Clarets treating the non-league crowd to some scintillating football, Burnley coming out of the match 3-1 victors with two goals from John Connelly and one from Bill White.

Programme Review:

This is a nice little commemorative 8-page programme at 6d.

Committee man Fred Blunt wrote the following:

A NIGHT TO REMEMBER

Tonight's game will be a talking point for many seasons to come. The long awaited switch-on not only heralds a new era in Folkestone football, but marks the visit of one of the great names in English soccer.

Last Saturday Burnley, with a confident win over Birmingham, consolidated their position as Division 1 Championship contenders. Today we welcome them at Cheriton Road as the best football side to grace this ground within living memory. On Saturday next they will meet the Spurs at White Hart Lane in a potential classic.

He went on to say: "May we here and now wish them victory in that encounter which could well establish them as league leaders, and the good luck to hold that position at the end of the season."

"We are indebted to The Chairman, officials and players of Burnley for visiting us to make this game worthy of the occasion. They will be staying in Folkestone until Saturday and we hope the weather will continue in its recent vein so that they may enjoy to the full their stay in this very pleasant town". Very kind and thoughtful words indeed
