Recommended to Burnley whilst still a schoolboy. Played fro Durham County Schoolboys. Joined Burnley in 1959 and made steady progress through the junior sides before turning professional in June 1962. Made his first team debut on 26th March 1963, at the age of 21 and scored his first Burnley goal in the process. Arthur was a real "Utility" player playing in all the forward line positions and at half-back; he also operated successfully as a 'Sweeper'. Slightly built but strong. Came to prominence when Jimmy McIlroy left for Stoke City. Scored a hat-trick in a league ,match against Everton at Goodison Park in September 1963 and then waited eight years before scoring another hat-trick against Orient at Turf Moor.
Played his last game for Burnley on 3rd April 1972, against Sunderland at Roker Park. Was transferred to Chesterfield in July 1972. Arthur played 133 times for Chesterfield scoring 12 goals.
