 Following on from their midweek success in the cup against Swansea Town, today Burnley were hosts to Newcastle United.

The Magpies always gave a good account of themselves at The Turf, and the Clarets faithful were looking forward to this encounter with high expectations of the result and of the prospective football spectacle, and on this occasion they were rewarded with both.

From the kick off the standard of football was very high from both sides with Pointer, Lawson and Robson doing the business for Burnley and George Eastham and Ivor Allchurch outstanding for Newcastle.

Burnley were the first on the scoresheet though when Robson scored from a long range screemer which flew past the helpless Harvey in the Newcastle goal.

Newcastle rallied though and Eastham looked the more dangerous with his many foraging runs.Eastham caused the Clarets defence to be on their mettle, but they seemed to be able to cope well, but the law of averages says that with all the pressure they would eventually break through, and so they did, when Allchurch finished off another great move by Eastham. With the score now at 1-1 the game was turning into an absolute cracker with the play switching from end to end.

Newcastle were looking the more dangerous now, but against the run of play Pointer grabbed the winner with a super shot that left Harvey floundering 2-1 to the Clarets.

This was how the game finished and both teams left the field of play with applause ringing in their ears.

This latest victory allowed Burnley to maintain their second position in the league, and gave them high hopes of a victory over Bradford City in the 5th Round of the F.ACup in two weeks time.

Programme Review

Just the one change to the printed teams and that was Scott deputising for McGuigan.

Harry Potts Calling

 This weeks comments from Harry were particularly relevent especially in light of comments about our most recent team and I quote.

"Thank you once more, Supporters, for your encouragement while the struggle was in progress. I greatly appreciate the trend in that direction, and I am equally sure that you have come to realise that your backing is a potent weapon added to our armoury.

After all, you want good results and must appreciate, I think, that how you can have a big bearing on the performance of the team.

I can assure you that a player out to give of his best is greatly encouraged when he feels his own club's supporters are right behind him.

If, on the other hand, he feels that he is deprived of confidence on your part, it is bound to be detrimental to his efforts.

Everywhere there are spectators who think they can drive on their team by abuse, believe me it is very false thinking. Fortunately I am proud to be able to say that here at turf Moor, we are very happy about the help you give us. No doubt there are the odd few who let their feelings get the better of them, as anywhere else, if there are, I would say to them : try and remember that abuse works right against the purpose they are seeking to achieve---victory for their team".

Poignant words there from Harry, it would appear that even wayback then with the Clarets pushing for the Championship, there were still a few supporters who liked to have a dig at the players.
