Claret Stat; Born Oakengates, native of ST George's in Shropshire. West Ham United signed him from Denaby United in 1938.

Played as a 'guest playe'r for Burnley during the wartime period. After a great deal of persuasion West Ham United let Burnley sign him on 29th October, 1946. Made his first team debut for Burnley on 9th November 1946, against Luton Town at Turf Moor.

This cool, polished defender played regulary in the team winning promotion to the First Division in 1946/47. Played at right-half in the FA Cup final in the same season.

Played his last game for Burnley on 4th September , 1954, against Everton at Turf Moor before being transfered to Bradford in October 1954.
