Sheffield Wednesday 1 - 1 Burnley Goalscorer: Robson Att: 18,420 Teams: Sheffield Wednesday:Springett, Megson, Curtis, McAnearney, Swan, Kay, Wilkinson, Young, Ellis, Fantham, Finney.
Referee: Mr R.J.Leafe (Nottingham) Linesmen: Mr R.Egan and Mr V.James After last weeks brilliant win over reigning champions Wolves at Turf Moor, the Clarets this week were to make the short journey over The Pennines to Hillsborough to face Sheffield Wednesday, who are currently occupying 14th position in the league and proving to be a very difficult team to beat on their home territory. Wednesday had been promoted to the top flight after having been 2nd Division champions last season. Funnily enough during the 1950's the Owls were to be either promoted or relegated in nearly every season of the decade. This encounter was expected to be a very tough one for Burnley as the Owls had the reputation of having a brutal defence, and so it proved to be, with Wednesday hitting (literally) us, with all they had. This was one of those games where a special guest turned up for the kick off, it happened a lot in those days, can you guess the guest? Yep, you are right it was the traditional black dog, the one that always managed to get on the pitch in time for the kick off at most games in those days, I remember them being very regular visitors at the Turf.
On to the game; Early in the first half Wednesday went into the lead when Keith Ellis nodded in off the crossbar, but within minutes Jimmy Robson had managed to bring the Clarets level with a pretty tame shot scraping past Springett. The game turned out to be tougher than expected, with both defences holding their own and the referee at times being very lenient towards Wednesday's hard![]() I will leave you with no doubts at all that this was a very hard earned and a very welcome point for the Clarets.
Programme Review Burnley team as printed in the programme, with Megson in for Johnson, and Young in for Froggatt for Wednesday.
Another article of great interest was entitled Burnley's Football Farm, which I have included in it's entirety below
