After their midweek visit to Folkestone Burnley travelled the short distance to meet the mighty Spurs. As a result of their previous victory at Turf Moor against Birmingham City, the Clarets were now fourth in the table only one point behind the current League leaders Tottenham Hotspur.

Due to International duty for Northern Ireland Burnley had to go into the game without Jimmy McIlroy, but Spurs also had players on International duty with three key players also missing,Blanchflower,Brown, and MacKay all to the same international ( Northern Ireland v Scotland ),so it was a very hopeful Burnley that went into the game against a much weakened Spurs side.

There was still no respite from the heatwave that was continuing to affect the whole of the country. From the kick off it was a very determined Spurs side that were showing off all the skills and it was no surprise when they took the lead in under 10 minutes from a shot from Medwin.

Tottenham continued to play the much more direct football, and were expected to go further into the lead, but it was a resolute Adamson and Cummings that took the game by the scruff of the neck and started to turn things around, with the Clarets coming more and more into the game.

Both teams went in at half time exhausted from the intense heat, the score still 1-0 to Spurs. The game continued in the second half as it had in the first, with both teams taking it in turns to attack.

By the last minute of the game it was a desperate for a point Burnley side that finally managed to get the ball in the net from a shot from the unlikely Brian Miller.

The Clarets had put in a very workmanlike performance and went off to Plymouth the happier team, after securing a vital point against the current league leaders.

Programme review

Teams were as printed in the programme.

The Spurs programme was a very disappointing flimsy 4 page affair costing 2d. Not much in it at all, so this week their is nothing to write about really, the only thing that caught my eye was the statement in bold at the bottom of the front page.It reads" In the interests of ground conditions,Players on either side will not sign autographs on the field" ??
