Steven started his career at Dundee United who he joined in 1996 from school,he made his League debut against Hearts the following year . Thompson spent seven years at the Arabs where he became a Scottish international, Steven went on to play 133 times for United scoring just 18 goals, his move to Glasgow Rangers was 24 hours after Billy Dodds had moved in the opposite direction, a fee of £200k was agreed and on boxing day in 2006 Thompson was a Ger.
In January 2006 Steven joined Cardiff City for £250k and became the first player to move from Rangers to Cardiff since 1910, his time at Cardiff started well 2 goals on debut against Burnley in a 3-0 win, his time at Ninian Park was not a settled one, after forming a goalscoring partnership with Micheal Chopra, Steven found himself the scapegoat for David Jones who put Thompson on the transfer list in January 2007. The arrival of Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Robbie Fowler condemned Thompson to the bench, where he spent most of his last season at Cardiff. Now on the last day of the transfer window Steven Thompson makes the journey to Turf Moor to become Burnley's seventh signing, when he signed on a free.
