Martin Dobson PDF Print E-mail

After being released by Bolton Wanderers in 1967 Martin signed for Burnley as a forward, making his debut in a 3-2 defeat at molineux in the autumn of 1967.

He eventually moved back to midfield where he gained international recognition, playing for England U23s against Bulgaria at Plymouths home park. In 1972/73 Martin became Captain of Burnley leading them to the second Division championship and to the FA Cup semi final, losing to Newcastle 1-3.

Four days later he won the first of his international caps in the 0-0 draw against Portugal at Goodison Park. In August 1974 Martin was transferred to Goodison Park for £300-000, possibly a British transfer record at the time.

In 1979 Martin Dobson returned to Burnley for £100-000 he could not help burnleys slide into third division obscurity though he once again captained Burnley to promotion, this time the third division championship in 1981/82 .

He was in my opinion treated unfairly by John Bond and was transferred out of Burnley to Bury becoming player manager. He also became manager of Bristol Rovers.

He since has become an author having had published "Ultimate Goals-Wembley dream for Jake and Ricky" Priced at £6-99 and available at Burnley's Club shop - http://www.claretsdirect.com/Index.pasp.
