After defeat at Ipswich a week later, Burnley were due to play Chelsea at Turf Moor on Tuesday, 17th August. In hour prior to the match the town was alive with the rumour that Club captain Martin Dobson, had been sold. Come the kick off, sure enough, no Dobbo, and later it was confirmed the great man had signed for Everton for a 'considerable sum'. Although the Chelsea match was lost, a run of good form was then enjoyed and on Tuesday, 24th September the Clarets travelled to Anfield for the eagerly awaited clash with the Reds. In only his seventh league appearance Ian Brennan scored his first goal for Burnley, and what a way to open his account. From fully thirty yards a left foot rocket fairly flew into Ray Clemence's net off a post, never rising more than twelve inches off the ground. The Kop was duly silenced and the Clarets came home with both points having held out against some punishing Liverpool pressure. The following Saturday, what a let down, a 3-5 hammering by the men from Upton Park. The season proceeded brightly enough however and the first hat-trick of his Burnley career by Peter Noble on 23rd November against Newcastle helped to ease the pain, if ever so slightly of the Hillsborough Semi-Final. During December the draw was made for the third round of the FA Cup. Who have Burnley drawn?...Who?...Wimbledon? dont they play tennis there rather than football? Or are that team that particular set of characters on T.V. ?

The league season continued with quite a good set of results after the Wimbledon trauma. Around Easter, however it all went wrong and after a 3-0 win at Coventry on 1st April there was only one more win in the last ten matches of the season which ended with a 0-0 draw at home to Stoke City on 26th April. In the penultimate match at Maine Road on 19th April, Derek Scott made the first of over 270 league appearances for Burnley. A mid table finish then, but only eight points behind champions Derby County and having scored more goals than anyone else.

1974 - 1975 Division One
The season begun on 17th August with a 1-2 defeat by Wolves, memorable for a 40 yard goal lobbed into the Burnley net by a certain Geoff Palmer, later of cause to don a Claret shirt himself.
