Relegation! one season in the first division and it ended in relegation.
The transfer record what stood for 16 years smashed, the £200k Burnley paid Rangers for full back Chris Vinnicombe eclipsed the Leighton James transfer of £165k when Potts brought him back from QPR in 1978. It was broke again before a ball could be kicked, £250k was paid for Liam Robinson, when Burnley made a deal with Bristol City.Another signing was Mark Winstanley who signed from Bolton. Jimmy Mullen used the trial market to good effect in the early days, Alan Harper, John Gayle and Gerry Harrison all signed on after successful trials, But the season would be long and hard, with the euphoria surrounding Burnleys Wembley victory over Stockport, the previous season was all but lost on the crowds(which were massively up on the previous few years) ,Money making games against liverpool in the Newly named Coca-Cola Cup and the FA Cup would keep the bank manager happy. But although this would be Longside poster "LightclifeClarets " favorite season, it was poor, 31 Players were used in the 46 games, and it wasn't until Paul Shaw and Kurt Nogan came in towards the end of the season where survival looked likely, but it wasn't to be, Burnley were back in division three. Burnley finished the campaign on 46 points, 8 points away from safety. Those in the relegation dog fight till the end of the season were Sunderland, Portsmouth, and West Brom all escaping leaving Swindon, Bristol City, and Notts County joining Burnley down in Division 3. Goals were hard to come by too, Heath didnt score a league goal, Liam Robinson only notched 7, David Eyres would again be top League goalscorer with 8! The 3 goals in 11 starts for Nogan, and 4 in 8 for Shaw. were the striking contributions, Captain Steve Davis bagged 7 from centre half.
